We’ve all been there. We know we should, we may even want to, but we just can’t seem to get ourselves to exercise. I get it, sometimes we just can’t seem to get the motivation to get changed and go and “Just Do It” like Nike says. For me, if I can just get started, I’m always happy I did, but for some reason it’s the starting that can be so hard. A while back I figured out some easy tricks that got me working out every time, IF I did them. So I’m offering them to you. Even when you don’t want to and your mind is forming every excuse in the book not to exercise, do these. Seriously, do them, they work.
1. Go shopping. Buy yourself a new, attractive(aka hot) outfit to work out in. It should be comfortable, but look like you are serious about working out. No baggy sweats, giant t-shirts, or saggy shorts. It doesn’t need to be name brand gear, I personally love Under Armour, but I also own some less expensive pieces from places like Winners or Marshalls. So get out there and buy a rockin outfit!
2. Put together a playlist on your phone, MP3 or IPOD. These should be tunes that get your foot tapping, your hips swaying and your body to want to move. So leave the John Denver for another day. Some of my favs on my playlist are Kelly Clarkson, Stronger; Cold Play, Viva la Vida; David Guetta, Titanium; Enrique Iglesias, I Like It; Lady Gaga, Born This Way; Pink, Just Like Fire; Hedley, Lose Control. Make sure you use high energy songs.
3. Set aside a time when you can get at least 20 minutes of exercise in. When the excuses start to flow……put on your new outfit…..even if you don’t feel like working out, all you are doing is putting on your new clothes. Next, put your earphones in your ear or turn on your speakers and connect your device and bring up your playlist. Now, just start moving…..go outside and walk, run or stand in front of your mirror and dance, but move. Listening to your new playlist will likely make you want to, at the very least, dance, which is a form of exercise. Now, try some other moves. Maybe some aerobics moves, or do a few push ups or crunches (make sure your form is right, quality over quantity). Now keep doing some dancing/walking/running while intermittently doing a few strength exercises. Keep it going for at least 20 minutes, rest and drink water as you need to, but keep moving even just a light march or stepping side to side.
There, that wasn’t so bad, was it? Now, remember all you have to do is put on that outfit and turn on your tunes. You’ll likely want to start moving to the music, and voila, you are exercising. Don’t feel like you need to do an hour long high intensity workout session to make it count, just get used to MOVING on a regular basis. Enough to get your heart rate accelerating and some sweat forming.
I was listening and dancing to Ed Sheeran, Shape of You while the photos in this post were taken. As you can tell by the picture with my eyes closed, I was feeling the music!
